What difference can BOWS make?
Given your support, we see the following proposals as being entirely realistic and affordable:
1) the dredging and the annual cutting of the Norfolk reed on the towpath side of the Canal
2) Improvements to the towpath to allow easier walking and cycling in winter
3) the cutting back of the overhanging branches of the largest trees
4) the establishment of a dedicated canal maintenance team in Leicestershire and opening of seating areas the banks of the canal
4) Information boards on the SSSI so that we understand its value and can identify the species it is trying to protect.
5) a Canoe Club which gives local BOWS’ members free access to kayaks and Canadian Canoes stored in Hickling, Harby and Plungar.
Parish Council gives it support to BOWS
Alan Wright, chair of the Belvoir Open Waterways Society and Paul Abel of Melton Borough Council attended the Barkestone, Plungar & Redmile Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 15th July 2009 to discuss proposals to remove Water Soldier and some Norfolk Reed from the Grantham Canal in the Plungar area.
Ken Brockway, the Clerk, has since confirmed that the parish council agreed to support the following proposal:
Total removal of the invasive weed Water Soldier
Removal of Norfolk Reed along the towpath side of the canal
the use of volunteer labour from the Probation Service.
